Louis Logic on fighting for Hip Hop

Courtesy of my man Ardamus over at http://www.weightless.net/ . Cool topic on the messageboard that I frequent. Louis Logic's latest show, where in it he dresses up like a woman. Now I am not going to go that far, but his reasoning behind it is pretty dope. Whether you agree or not, you got to give it to him once you hear his points. Read below ( I highlighted some of the good parts:

"Now, that should answer any and all questions about the "how". Now I will account for the "why". Why the fuck not? I can't begin to tell you how sick I am of the default rap attitude about anything that crosses the Great Wall of Masculinity. I find it shocking how many people are still such cowards in this particular genre of music and art. Can you get any more childish and insecure? A well known writer who covers our little corner of the music world posed this question in response to some of the silly shit I had to endure because of this stunt: "Is there anything gayer than assuming that everything is gay?" (Thanks to Adam Bernard for that little gem). I was so amused that I wanted to share that with you. You know what I'd like? No. Like isn't really saying it. I'd LOVE to see one of these kids who writes cowardly little messages online tell Wesley Snipes he's a "faggot" for dressing like a woman in the film Too Wong Foo. He'd crack your little neck between his index finger and thumb. That would be sooo much funnier than anything you have to offer.

But in all seriousness, there are always reasons for the risks I take. I generally like to leave these things to mystery, but if you must know, I just love pushing the boundaries. I love keeping the kids who listen to my music and go to my shows guessing. It gives me great pleasure watching their eyes bulge out of their heads in disbelief when I do something they aren't expecting. Sometimes, I even allow myself to think that I might teach them something about daring and risk. You guys know what I dream of for the future of rap music? I dream that the musicians who are making it are actually knowledgeable about many mediums of art, many genres of music, instrumentation and even music theory. I dream that they won't have to fear wandering off the beaten path and that they will be regarded by other artists as legitimate and worthy of respect without question or hesitation. One day the average rapper will be fluent in music composition and competent on several instruments. Can you imagine how sick it would be if you're favorite mc had boundless access to anything he or she wanted to hear as a beat accompaniment because they could play or write anything the were able to dream up? Man, what a beautiful world it would be. Maybe we wouldn't be in the position we are now where even the most popular rap artists in the world can't sell a fuckin' gold record. This is the first time I've ever felt like maybe all those old coot naysayers back in the early 80's who said rap was a fad were right. Something has to be done. I don't know what. I'm trying anything and everything. I'm singing. I'm playing piano. Anything! If I gotta get into a bustier and stockings to wake you sleepy fuckers up, then so be it. I'll get myself a fuckin' Victoria's Secret credit card and go on a spree. I'm not letting rap and hip hop end without a fight, even if it means I have to fight like a girl!"
